What’s Inside Our Plastic-Free Reset Box

BRiMM's Head of Beauty Sam Zimmerman shares how and why she chose every planet-positive item, plus more expert opinions and the unique founder story behind each

Curating our reset boxes took months of deliberation, trialing and testing and I have to say: I’m really proud of our Plastic-Free Reset Box. This was an important one for us to pull together because when the British Beauty Council shared the fact that “70% of our industry's plastic waste is not recycled”, it was a huge wake-up call. On top of that, it was revealed that 56% of people are not recycling their bathroom products, so we really had to get our heads together to create a smarter solution.

While beautiful packaging can be seriously appealing, it is not unusual for many products to end up with more packaging than product, and the waste and cost is staggering. So we thought: what if we were to curate a beautiful selection of essentials, within which no plastic whatsoever could be seen? Leaving you with no need to umm and aah over which parts of it are recyclable and which aren’t. So let me take you through what’s in here, and why…

SBTRCT Discover Set
When Ben Grace launched SBTRCT back in 2020 it made total sense to me. The majority of our products are made with water as the first (and main) ingredient and a huge amount of necessary packaging. Ben has simply stripped all that back, made a solid skincare line that’s waterless, and put in the hard graft required to create formulations packed with all the usual hard-hitting ingredients our skin needs: vitamin c (to brighten) and squalane (to hydrate) – but without the waste. While it might not feel ‘normal’ to use a cleansing bar, I urge you to jump out of your comfort zone, as the real winner of this duo comes from the moisturiser, which, when mixed with a little water, turns to a balm and melts perfectly into your skin. SBTRCT have won countless awards for their innovation, and as ex-Marie Claire beauty and style director (and BRiMM founder member and regular contributor), Lisa Oxenham shares, “SBTRCT consistently stands out for its innovative approach and commitment to sustainability”.  So it’s definitely one to watch

Laro London Whitening Toothpaste
Possibly the hardest nut to crack was finding a toothpaste for our boxes. Not because there aren’t many on the market, but finding a natural alternative, that actually works on cleaning and leaving our breath minty, remained a challenge. That was until our founder James discovered Laro London. Beth Bisley, their founder, wanted to reduce our bathroom plastic waste, as well as the microplastics that can be found in many oral formulas and very recently launched Laro London. James’ very honest children were the harsh judges of this one, and approved Dad’s fresh breath above and beyond the long list of others that were tested. The slick design of the aluminium tube scrunches down beautifully and what’s even smarter is the aluminium cap, which can be incredibly tough to source.

“As a dentist I am always looking for ways to encourage good oral hygiene while also boosting my patients' oral microbiome,” says Dentist Dr Francis Chohan. “Laro offers a solution for people who are concerned with the chemicals in our environment, but don't want to compromise on tooth protection. Combining a natural hydroxyapatite toothpaste with a good diet and good hydration not only benefits your mouth but your whole body.”

UpCircle Shampoo Crème with Rosemary Oil + Coconut & Conditioner Crème with Rosemary Oil + Bamboo Extract
When you take a look at the UpCircle journey, their impact and the story behind each product, it’s hard not to be utterly impressed. The brand was created by a brother-sister duo who went on a mission to create powerful skin and haircare, utilising the waste from the food and beverage industry, and it’s now earned B Corp status. While their haircare might be less well known, it is by no means less impressive. The shampoo in the duo is made with upcycled pink berries from the fragrance industry to soothe the scalp and strengthen hair, and the conditioner is made with upcycled orange peel wax, a by-product of the orange juice industry, fantastic for sealing split and broken ends. They’re both packaged in glass jars and housed with aluminium lids. Here’s what Helen Wilson Beevers wrote for The Independent after trying it: “A little bit went a long way to cleanse my mid-length hair, and I really enjoyed how unusual the formula’s consistency was. It’s suitable for all hair types too. After washing and drying my ’do, I was impressed to see smooth strands that felt soft and smelt pretty good too. If you’re looking for a refillable alternative to regular shampoo, in a chic holder, I think this could be the buy for you.”

KLEEN Soap On A Rope in Good Vibrations
Fancy body washes have their place, but there’s something incredibly nostalgic about going back to basics with a bar of soap. Jutta Klee, the founder of KLEEN, has managed to truly outshone any soaps you might have previously tried with her creation. How? Because she’s formulated each bar with three important components: ingredients, scent and experience. She makes all of her blends in her Kent basement studio in small batches, ensuring optimum freshness. You’ll know this yourself after just one wash, as the aroma – lemongrass, rosemary and grapefruit – fills your entire bathroom. The Good Vibrations option is also loaded with pink clay to purify and brighten skin, coconut oil and shea butter to soften. What’s more, Jutta has used recycled organic cotton for the rope ties and reusable cotton travel bags for the packaging. “After trying my first I quickly went on to discover more from the KLEEN range,” says Wellness Coach and lymphatic drainage specialist Ksenija Selivanova. “I hang them in the shower and, beyond looking cool, they smell great. They also stay on the string till the very end!”
